Job Description


We are currently seeking a dynamic Vice President, Regional Medical Director to join our team at our office in Manhattan, NY.  Position provides medical leadership to Beacon Health Options throughout the state of New York; supervises the Medical Directors and other medical staff dedicated to New York State; represent medical management to the health plans and clients of Beacon in the state of NY. Position provides a critical role in the development and leadership of the Quality and Utilization management committees overseeing the work of Beacon in NYS and ensures that clinical outcomes and goals are achieved. Provides guidance and leadership to ensure that quality improvement goals are met and is responsible for monitoring and guiding the Utilization Management approach and ensure that business goals are achievable. Position oversees medical practices and provides medical leadership to all the NYS psychiatrists/medical staff.  Provides input into corporate-wide policies, procedures, protocols, criteria, and guidelines through the clinical and work-site policy committee and the Executive Medical Management Committee.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides broad-based medical leadership to all functional areas of the New York State Engagement Center and participates in organization-wide strategic planning and program development.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs medical policy, programming, and utilization initiatives to ensure contractual compliance and the most efficient, cost-effective care for members. 
  • Identifies opportunity to develop and implement integration between primary care and behavioral health services.
  • Oversees the efficient operation of the Medical Operations Department.
  • Serves as the principal medical manager, subject matter expert and advisor to the Engagement Center Regional Vice Presidents and regional clinical/quality and operations directors in the areas of medical provider relations and quality management.
  • Works with the Quality Management Departments to ensure that care is being appropriately monitored, delivered, and if required, identifies intervention to assure continued patient care and safety.
  • Assists in formulation of clinical utilization and cost forecast through the budgeting process.
  • Monitors and executes control to meet budget targets. 
  • Develops and implement medical policy/procedure guidelines. 
  • Reviews corporate and program-specific criteria, revising as necessary to ensure compliance.
  • Monitors compliance of state and federal regulatory requirements, which apply to medical care issues. 
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with regional medical leaders of both state agencies and health delivery systems and liaisons, as needed, with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Mental Health, OASAS, NYS Department of Health and other state regulatory agencies in NY.
  • Recruits, orients, supervise, and appraise assigned Medical Affairs and Peer Advisors.
  • Manages workflow, productivity and performance as it impacts on utilization and other performance standards.
  • Direct supervision and development of all the Medical Director and medical staff in New York State.
  • Participates in Beacon Health Options corporate committees, including the Executive Medical Management Committee (EMMC), the National Credentialing Committee (NCC) and the Scientific Committee and ad-hoc projects, as requested by the Corporate Chief Medical and Clinical Officers.
  • Participates in Sales presentations as directed by the Corporate Chief Medical Officer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned based on the service center and corporate requirements.

Position Requirements:

  • Education:  MD or DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) from an accredited medical school and board certification in psychiatry by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  Board certification by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review preferred.
  • Licensures: Unrestricted medical license to practice independently in the State of New  (i.e. current and unrestricted medical license in psychiatry or osteopathy).
  • Relevant Work Experience:  Five (5) years in managed care setting with, at a minimum, three (3) years in a Medical Director role.Substantial knowledge of administrative management experience as well as knowledge of mental health and chemical dependency services and practices, including a broad knowledge of treatment techniques, therapeutic procedures, and discharge planning. 
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Excellent written and communication skills
    • Basic level of PC skills required
    • Experience with staff supervision
