Job Description


We are currently seeking a dynamic Substance Use Clinician to join our team.  The Substance Use Clinician is responsible for transition of care and care coordination activities for members with utilization of detoxification and other substance use services. S/he will collaborate with health plan clinical staff and detox facility staff to attempt to ensure comprehensive clinical care and to engage and ideally motivate these individuals to engage in aftercare and achieve recovery. Ability to develop a strong collaborative relationship with detox providers is required.  At this time, this position is for Massachusetts business only.

(Must be located near the Worcester/Central MA area)

50 - 75% of working time spent on-site at provider sites and/or other locations

Remainder of hours spent in home based remote office

May require time commitments beyond 40 hours per week at times.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Actively collaborates with members and detox facility staff in face to face on-site discharge planning meetings including assisting with accessing necessary services

  • Analyzes specific utilization problems for members with substance use disorders and plans and implements solutions that directly influence quality of care

  • Utilizes data on substance use patterns to determine if additional services are necessary

  • Provides short-term care management activities for at risk members

  • Serves as the clinical liaison and provides oversight for contracted substance use community support services.

  • Actively collaborates with health plan clinical staff on high risk members with medical comorbidity developing care plans and discharge plans

  • Acts as a resource / subject matter expert to prior authorization team and concurrent teams assisting with determination of level of care for members accessing detox services or when continued care is requested

  • Provides information to members and providers regarding substance use benefits, and community treatment resources

  • Attends meetings telephonically or in person with detox providers as requested and works with Beacon’s clinical and provider partnership managers and leadership to resolve problems that may arise

  • Interacts with Physician Advisors to discuss clinical/authorization questions and concerns regarding specific cases

  • Interacts with providers and facilities in a professional, respectful manner that facilitates the treatment process

  • Authorizes treatment for medical necessity for substance use problems according to clinical information given by providers and internal criteria for medical necessity and appropriateness of care

  • Complies with Beacon’s standards for documentation of clinical information, clinical contacts and care management and authorization of care

  • Schedules outpatient appointments as necessary based on urgency and clinical need

  • Assists with NCQA, URAC and other QI initiatives

    Other duties as assigned

    Position Requirements:

Education: Masters degree in behavioral health field/discipline. 

Licensure:  Current, valid, unrestricted independent license in behavioral health  (LICSW, LMFT, LMHC, or LADC I)  or BSN . Re-verification will take place no less than every 3 years.

Relevant Work Experience: 

The Substance Use Clinician is required to be educated in current principles, procedures and knowledge of behavioral health.  S/he must be a licensed behavioral health clinician and practice within the scope of their licensure with a minimum of 3 years’ substance use experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Managed care experience preferred.
