ABOUT THE POSITION

We are currently seeking a dynamic Peer Specialist to join our team at our office in Rocky Hill, CT!  The Peer Specialist shall provide consumer and provider support by assisting Medicaid members connect to treatment, and helping community agencies develop and/or enhance their understanding of person centered care and the support network that is available to  members. The Peer Specialist functions as a part of an interdisciplinary team designed to meet the needs of Medicaid members. The Peer Specialist provides face to face support to members with complex behavioral health and/or substance use needs who frequently access services.  Face to face meetings are conducted in hospital settings and/or in the community (including clinical and non-clinical settings). On average, 60% of the Peer Specialist work is done in the community interacting directly with members and providers. The goal of the Peer Specialist is to support members in the development of wellness and recovery goals and to assist them in identifying and connecting to resources that will assist them in identifying their own pathway to recovery.

“Peer Specialists are individuals with lived experience, meaning they have experienced a mental health and/or substance use disorder or cared for a family member who has, and they have moved through the behavioral health care system. Peer Specialists use their knowledge of the system and their personal recovery to provide hope that recovery is possible. Adult Peer Specialists interact with members in their community, sharing their story of recovery to assist members in connecting with services and engage in a recovery process of their choice.”

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a CT BHP “Ambassador” across Connecticut, demonstrating by example the mission of the organization and its commitment to person centered care, recovery and wellness.
  2. Conduct and/or assist in the coordination of training for Beacon Health Options staff as well as community agencies, providers, consumers, families and others across the state.
  3. Partner with community agencies to assist members who may need help navigating the recovery system, explaining member rights and responsibilities, addressing feelings of shame, guilt and stress and learning self-advocacy skills, recognizing hope and wellness are possible.
  4. Work closely with provider relations and clinical staff to identify area resources, both traditional and non traditional, that are available to members.
  5. Collaborate with our state partners, as necessary, to support development and training surrounding local resources and the development of peer run services.
  6. Identify self-help groups and/or networks of adult consumers and families.  Assist in development of new groups if the need is identified.
  7.  Work collaboratively with the Provider Relations department, supporting the success of  any sub contracts.Outreach to and work with consumer advocacy groups across the state to educate individual’s regarding Beacon Health Options and the services provided as well as to promote recovery and resiliency efforts.

Position Requirements:

Education: High School diploma or High School equivalency diploma required, Associates degree preferred.
Certification: Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery-CCAR Recovery Coach Certification required. If incumbent does not have the certification at time of hire, it must be obtained within one year of employment.
Relevant Work Experience:   2-3 years’ experience serving as an advocate to families or individuals within the behavioral health service delivery system. . Knowledge of community outreach and education preferred. Bilingual preferred.
