Job Description

The Database Administrator II is responsible for database architecture, design, implementation and administration of enterprise class relational database management systems.  Database platforms include Oracle on LINUX and UNIX, DB2 UDB on IBM iSeries and SQL Server in support of a National Data Warehouse as well as core JAVA and SQL Server applications. Identifies and evaluates database requirements to insure the implementation and administration of high quality, consistent and well-managed database structures.  Works with Software Development to facilitate database development, testing and implementation throughout the Software Development Life Cycle.  Serves as a subject matter expert on performance tuning, query analysis and recommendations, and efficient use of database structures.  Performs capacity management to ensure allocation of storage in an efficient manner to meet current and future growth requirements.  Facilitates and adheres to Change Management System policies and procedures.  Communicates accurately and effectively with management and project teams, escalates issues and risks in a timely manner and is open and honest.  Maintains the highest degree of sensitivity, compassion, and respect for service members and their families.  Ensures that Beacon Health Options remains free of any political bias and shall ensure consistency of service regardless of installation, location, or any other factor.

Duties and Responsibilities.

  1. Interfacing with senior management and staff of multiple corporate departments and service centers on high-level issues involving data architecture, compliance requirements, and reporting needs.  This involves in-depth analysis of data availability, maintainability, and accuracy.

  2. Translation of corporate business needs into long-term architecture solutions and work plans. Defines, designs, and builds database solutions.

  3. Responsible for the maintenance, data design, database architecture, metadata and repository creation.

  4. Facilitates change control, problem management and communication among data architects, programmers and analysts. Establishes and enforces processes to ensure a consistent, well managed, and integrated database infrastructure.

  5. Provides subject matter expertise on corporate data models, data architecture and functions and capabilities of the databases.  Understanding of data usage by multiple corporate departments, i.e. Finance, DMA, and how these requirements can best be met;

  6. Key contributor to application development projects.

Minimum Entry Level Qualifications

  • Education:    

BA/BS in Computer science, Information technology or similar discipline

  • Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

    • 10 years of increasing responsibility.

    • Strong project lifecycle management experience.

    • Extensive knowledge of enterprise class relational database management systems to include, Oracle, IBM DB/2 UDB for iSeries and SQL Server.  Certifications a plus.
