Medical Director- Buffalo, NY

We are currently seeking a dynamic Medical Director of Behavioral Health to join our team in Buffalo, NY.  The Medical Director will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for clinical services including identification of potential quality indicators. The Medical Director works closely with Health plan partners developing programs to impact the overall health of members with behavioral health and co-occurring medical conditions. This position is full time.

Position Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement, and interpret clinical-medical policies and procedures specific to behavioral health or can be expected to impact the health and recovery of individuals with behavioral health diagnoses.
  • Ensure strong integration of physical and behavioral health care services in conjunction with the Health Plan Chief Medical Officer/Medical Director
  • Clinical peer review, recruitment and supervision, as needed.
  • Provider education, training, and orientation to promote adoption of evidence based practices.
  • Clinical triage and the identification of potential quality of care issues.
  • Behavioral health provider quality profile design and data interpretation.
  • Develop and implement behavioral health sections of the QM/UM Plan, including chairing behavioral health committees for QM/UM and peer review.
  • Administer all behavioral health QM/UM and performance improvement activities, including oversight of grievances and appeals.
  • Attend at regular (at least quarterly) leadership and medical director meetings designated by the State behavioral health contract manager.
  • Participate in Regional Planning meetings.
  • Chair behavioral health subcommittees (i.e., BH Advisory; BH Utilization; BH Credentialing; BH Quality) and report to the Health Plan’s Quality Assurance Committee.

Position Requirements:

Education: Must meet education requirements established by NY State Medical Board for issuance of NY professional license. 

Licensure:  Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of NY, and have ABPN Board Certification in Psychiatry

Relevant Work Experience:   Minimum 5 years post graduate experience with patient care.  Minimum 5 years of experience with behavioral health/substance use disorder utilization management, preferably in a managed care and/or hospital setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Advanced beginner or better PC skills, and comfort level, required
  • Experience with staff supervision
  • Curious, industrious and innovative
  • Enjoys working in a matrix organization on multidisciplinary teams
